Cradduck says area gangs are dangerous. "The weapons now are a very big profitable source of income for gangs: robbery and burglary, drugs, absolutely." In fact, the FBI classifies MS-13 as the most violent gang in America, and a threat to national security."We're seeing a rise in violence, not just in gang versus gang." Cradduck says one of the biggest myths is you must be in a gang, to be victimized."Here locally, especially with the violence we've had from gang members, it's overwhelmingly on citizens who are not in gangs, and are just victims to these members."

Recent research about youth gangs reveals that most members join before the age of 18, and, contrary to popular belief, they do not make membership a lifelong commitment. Three longitudinal studies showed that from one-half to two-thirds of members stay in a gang for one year or less.8 Unfortunately, gang lifestyles are sensationalized in fashion, music, and the mass media. Such attention serves to reinforce the attractiveness of gang membership, especially to adolescents, for whom a sense of belonging is an important aspect of identity formation.

When young women become involved in gangs, it is usually through relationships with boyfriends or brothers, according to research by A. Campbell reviewed in the Journal of Criminal Justice. Girl gang members experience more long-term, harmful effects from gang membership than their male counterparts, and some research finds that "gang membership itself opened up young women to additional victimization risk."

Often, gangs have set meeting dates and read from their "Book", and discuss gang business. In a strange sort of way, these meetings resemble fraternity or civic meetings. Many gang members have told of being "violated" for not knowing certain portions of their knowledge when called upon by a gang leader to recite it.

Gang members can earn aces for their gangs in most matched games, whether at the hideout or not. The hideout offers a matching interface that is nearly identical to the one at the saloon, except that players will not be matched with other members of their own gangs in competitive matches, and will only be matched with members of their own gangs in cooperative matches. The Table tab lets the hideout serve as a private unmatched back parlor.
