Ganges River

In Varanasi (... called Kashi), the power of Ganga, the Hindu mother-goddess of the Ganges River, is strongest. Each dawn she calls her children to the ghats, the steps leading down to the water's edge. The young and strong purify themselves in the river's polluted waters. The old and the infirm, too weak for rituals, wait for death. In time, Ganga carries their souls, released from the bondage of reincarnation, to heaven. Their bodies, as ash afloat her crests or flesh submerged in her depths, return to the river.

The Ganges River (Gang Ma or Great Mother) is the holiest river in the world. Rising from the pure glacial meltwaters of the Himalayas, it flows down onto India's Northern Plain, then heads eastwards into the swamplands of Bangladesh, finally discharging a 500-km (310-mile) tongue of red silt into the Bay of Bengal.

Construction of 50 or more dams and barrages within the Ganges River dolphin’s historic range has drastically altered its habitat and fragmented the population. More such structures are planned or are under consideration. Approximately 3500 km (2200 mi) of embankments have been constructed along the main channel of the Ganges and its tributaries. Embankments interrupt access to spawning habitat for floodplain-dependent fishes and eliminate eddy counter-currents where the dolphins spend much of their time. Dredging and the removal of stones, sand, and woody debris ... compromise the ecological integrity of the riverine environments, especially in small tributaries. Concentrations of toxic chemicals such as organochlorine and butyltin in the tissues of Ganges River dolphins are high enough to cause concern about adverse effects.

The Ganges River collection takes the traditional values of oriental designs and interprets them into a modern lifestyle. The bold selection of colors and avoidance of common motifs in traditional oriental rugs make the designs appealing. These rugs add sophistication, beauty and elegance to any decor. Hand woven in India, the Ganges River collection is made of extra soft, New Zealand wool, densely knotted onto a durable cotton foundation, assuring long wear for years of enjoyment.

Deliberate killing of Ganges River dolphins for meat and oil is believed to have declined in most areas, but it still occurs in some locations. The demand for these products means that there is little incentive for fishermen to reduce the bycatch or to release dolphins that are still alive when found in nets.

The River Chambal originating in western India joins the Ganges River near Allahabad. Singh and Sharma (1985)[5] estimated the presence of at least 45 dolphins between Batesura and Pachhnada (total 320 km) in the River Chambal during 1983-1985 (Fig.1). This is an observed density of one adult per about 6.5 km.
