Johannesburg, October 2007 – Local band Gang of Instrumentals, or GI as they have been dubbed by their fans, is shaking up the pop urban beat. The band’s unique blend of soul, hip hop and reggae infused with contagious lyrics is dictating a new trend in afro-funk music.

Gang activity does not have any territorial or ethnic boundaries. Criminal activity that accompanies some of the gangs can range from a territory as small as a single neighborhood block, to a highly mobile criminal operation that reaches to the coastal states. Gangs may become criminally competitive with each other, and have a need to expand into new territories including suburban areas.

Gang injunctions have a clearly demonstrable positive affect on the neighborhood area covered. Some have had a remarkable effect. In smaller areas, gang nuisance activity can be permanently removed. In larger areas, with gangs entrenched for years, the gang’s hold on the area can be reduced and maintained with a small team of law enforcement officers. Anecdotal evidence is fully supportive; residents continue to ask for the period of peace a gang injunction can provide.

Gang involvement begins as early as elementary school. Children 7 and 8 years of age are being recruited to work for the gangs because gangs are aware of the difference in the punishment for youths in the criminal justice system. Todays youth are drawn into the gang culture for a variety of reasons, a need to be accepted, to be popular, to interact with other peers, protection, family, etc.
