Gang: Gang Members

Gang related graffiti may be the first sign that there are gangs in the community. Gangs use graffiti as their "newspapers," their way of marking boundaries and warning rival gangs. Graffiti may ... be used to advertise the selling of drugs. Or as a means of erecting a memorial to a killed gang member.

Gang tattoos mark a person as part of a street gang or a prison gang. They symbolize membership. They represent the wearer's beliefs. And sometimes they record acts of violence or even murder. Every gang has its own set of tattoos and markings. A few symbols, like a teardrop under one eye to represent either a murder or the death of a loved one, cross gang boundaries.

Gang members will often wear clothing that identifies a person with a specific gang. For example, one gang may identify with blue, and carry a blue bandanna. Another gang may identify with red and carry a red bandanna. Hispanic gangs identify with dark clothing, generally black. These colors may be reflected in other items of clothing, including baseball caps and shoe laces. Anti-semitic gangs may wear heavy black boots and military-style clothing.

Gang members who have attained the rank of recruiter can invite other players to join their gang as members. As with pardner invitations, a short message can accompany a gang invitation. Recruiters can only invite people whose portraits they have direct access to (not through top ranked lists), including pardners, and cannot invite anybody who is already in a gang. Recruiters can set up recruitment parlors to attract only players who are not already in another gang.

Gang Members share a name; form of identification (e.g., clothing, colors), "turf" or territory, and code talk (e.g., hand signs, graffiti, slang). The signs below could mean your child is in a gang. Remember; none of these are sure signs of gang involvement.

Gang leaders are able to assign titles to recruiters, members, and leaders of lower seniority. These titles replace the normal ranking for a member or recruiter, and can be viewed on their wanted poster. Leaders are always displayed as a "Leader" on their wanted poster, regardless of whether they have been assigned a title or not.
