Gamespot: Reviews

Except Gamespot removed Jeff Gerstmann's video review. I could see this being "bad timing" any other way, but the fact that they went out of their way to remove a video review for the game that was already posted (yet Jeff's other reviews on the site are fine) says it all. CNET, Gamespot, and even Jeff are all keeping tight lipped on it, too.

Anybody that still took Gamespot seriously after the "the Savage Lands" review debacle deserves the crappy journalism the site advertises to them. If you don't remember or didn't hear, an Ad Monkey at Gamespot gave The Savage Lands, an online only shooter, a low score. The developer took issue with his review, did a little research in their server logs, and discovered the Ad Monkey in question played the game for less than two hours. He most likely spent more time writing the game review than he did playing the game.

The smart thing to do from Gamespot's perspective would have been to fire Gerstmann 3-4 months after his review, thereby depriving his supporters of any reason to cry foul. Now they've got a crisis of confidence on their hands, both from advertisers and from readers.

Eidos pays the bills for Gamespot so if there is a bad review they will pressure Gamespot to reprimand the reviewer. This happens in all industries when there are ads in mags that have reviews.

Gerstmann had been with Gamespot since 1996 and was largely responsible for its growth. Several past reviews of his have been controversial, including an 8.8 awarded to Twilight Princess and a 10.0 for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3.
