In the aftermath of the attempted coup, Senegal and The Gambia signed the 1982 Treaty of Confederation. The Senegambia Confederation came into existence; it aimed eventually to combine the armed forces of the two states and to unify their economies and currencies. The Gambia withdrew from the confederation in 1989.

Gambia liegt an der Westküste des afrikanischen Kontinents und ist mit 11.295 km² dessen kleinster Flächenstaat. Die ungefähr 740 Kilometer lange Grenze folgt auf einer Länge von etwa 480 km sowie einer Breite von 10 bis 50 km dem Verlauf des Gambia-Flusses. Abgesehen vom Küstenabschnitt ist Gambia vom zwanzigmal größeren Senegal umschlossen. Häufig wird das Land als eine Enklave bezeichnet, was aber nach der Definition inkorrekt ist. Der ungewöhnliche Grenzverlauf Gambias ergibt sich aus der Tatsache, dass dies die Reichweite der Kanonen der britischen Schiffe auf dem schiffbaren Teil des Flusses war.

The British did not begin to develop Gambia properly until after World War II when administration posts were set up. Internal self-government came in 1963. Independence Day was 18 February 1965 when Gambia became a sovereign republic within the British Commonwealth of Nations. In 1969, Gambia and Senegal formed Senegambia, but in 1982 the confederation was dissolved with the mutual consent of both partners.

Die arabische Sprache ist eine alte Schriftsprache im Gambia-Tal, denn im Zuge des Transsaharahandels kamen schon seit dem 10. Jahrhundert v. Chr.[4] nordafrikanische Händler zu den westafrikanischen Herrscherhäusern. Durch die Annahme des Islam wurde die arabische Sprache, die heute als Bildungssprache und Sprache der Religion gilt, weiter verbreitet. Durch die grenznahen Kontakte mit Senegal haben viele Gambier auch fundierte Französisch-Kenntnisse. Gambier, die Kontakt mit dem Tourismus haben, besitzen oft zusätzlich Sprachkenntnisse in Deutsch, Niederländisch, Schwedisch oder Finnisch.
