The Gambia became independent from the UK in 1965. It formed a short-lived federation of Senegambia with Senegal between 1982 and 1989. In 1991 the two nations signed a friendship and cooperation treaty. A military coup in 1994 overthrew the president and banned political activity, but a 1996 constitution and presidential elections, completed a nominal return to civilian rule. The Gambia is a small, peaceful and politically stable West African country with a geuine sense of hospitality. Even the… crocodiles confirm that!

Climate The Gambia is generally recognized as having perhaps the most agreeable climate in West Africa. There is a sub-tropical climate with distinct dry and rainy seasons. The dry season is from November to May with the Harmattan wind keeping the humidity low. The rainy season is from June to October with high humidity and average temperatures around 26-32C, 78-80 F. Temperatures are mildest along the coastline, and the amount and duration of rainfall lessens inland. Rainfall in most parts of the country does not exceed 40 inches and sunny periods occur on most days even in the rainy season.

Travel in The Gambia is difficult because of poor road conditions, particularly during the rainy season, which generally lasts from June through October. Although there are paved main roads in the greater Banjul area, many are poorly maintained and poorly lit. With the installation of street lights on some roads in the Banjul area, some drivers no longer use their vehicle lights at night. Most roads outside the Banjul area are still unlit and unpaved. Livestock and pedestrians pose road hazards throughout the country, including in the greater Banjul area.Drivers and pedestrians should exercise extreme caution to prevent accidents.
