Gallbladder: Surgeries
built 638 days ago
Gallbladder cancer may be treated with one or more techniques including surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. If detected at an early stage, gallbladder cancer has a much higher chance of being successfully treated. A team of doctors, including a gastroenterologist, surgeon, medical oncologist, and radiation oncologist may be involved in treatment planning.

The gallbladder can be removed minimally invasive or laparoscopically. This is done with 4 small incisions as an outpatient procedure. This is done in an ambulatory surgery center with minimal discomfort and limitations. Most patients can eat a regular diet the evening of surgery and return to work with no restrictions in about a week. There is minimal discomfort and scarring associated with the procedure. Most patients can be scheduled for their procedure shortly after the office visit.
The first line of treatment for gallbladder cancer is almost always surgery. With all surgeries, the expertise of the surgeon is an important factor in the success of treatment. Cancer Centersurgeonsare recognized experts in gastrointestinal surgery and can provide you with the most minimally invasive surgery possible for your condition.
US News Americas Best Hospitals, 2007 Most gallbladder surgery today is done using laparoscopic surgical techniques, in which narrow instruments, including a camera, are introduced into the abdomen through small puncture holes. If the procedure is expected to be straightforward, laparoscopic cholecystectomy may be used. A laparoscopic camera is inserted into the abdomen near the umbilicus (navel). Instruments are inserted through 2 more small puncture holes. The gallbladder is found, the vessels and tubes are cut, and the gallbladder is removed.
A newer way to remove the gallbladder is called laparoscopic (say "lap-are-oh-skop-ick") cholecystectomy. With this surgery, a laparoscope (a small, thin tube with a scope on the tip of it that is used to see the inside of your body) is used to remove the gallbladder. Several small incisions are used rather than one large incision.
Chemotherapy uses anticancer drugs that can destroy gallbladder cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs are delivered either via the mouth or intravenously, and can be used alone or in conjunction with surgery and/or radiation therapy. Fractionated dose chemotherapy, an option offered at CTCA, breaks down the usual single large dose of chemotherapy into several small doses, and can work against cancerous cells for a longer period of time while reducing some of chemotherapy's unpleasant side effects.
