If you have already received conventional radiation therapy as part of your gallbladder cancer treatment, and are now experiencing recurrent tumors, IMRT may be a treatment option for you. For some gallbladder cancer patients, IMRT replaces external beam treatments. However, in most cases, IMRT is used in conjunction with or after another primary gallbladder cancer treatment.

More recently, gemcitabine has shown activity in gallbladder cancer. Early phase studies show an increased response rate with gemcitabine combination therapy over historical treatment response rates with 5-FU alone. Gemcitabine has been studied in combination with cis-platinum and capecitabine.

Most often, gallbladder tumors develop in the inner lining of the gallbladder, a small pear- shaped organ in the abdomen. Gallbladder cancer is extremely invasive and can quickly metastasize to other parts of the body including the gallbladder wall, nearby lymph nodes, or the liver.

The SEER registry from 1995-2001 shows 5-year survival rates for localized gallbladder cancer of approximately 40%. The 5-year survival rate for regional disease is approximately 15%, and the 5-year survival rate for distant metastatic disease is less than 10%.
