Galileo: Father
built 629 days ago
At age 17, Galileo went to the University of Pisa. He enrolled as a medical student, following his father’s advice, but turned to math, after persuading his father that he didn’t want to be a doctor. His father allowed him to be tutored by the Tuscan court mathematician, Ricci, who designed fortifications, which no doubt impressed Galileo (Reston, page 15).
1585 Galileo begins his studies in September at the University of Pisa, where he studies medicine and mathematics. Though he is a diligent medical student, mostly to satisfy his father's wish that he become a doctor, Galileo prefers mathematics.

Galileo's father was named Vincenzio, and his mother was named Giulia. Vincenzio was a gifted musician and mathematician, and he was ... a cloth merchant to earn extra money. Galileo was educated by his father until he was 10 years old.

[A]ll of his troubles did not stop Galileo (JPG 15k) from starting a family of his own. He never married but fathered two daughters, Livia and Virginia, and a son, Vincenzo, with his mistress, Marina Gamba. He realized though, that he would not be able to afford dowries for his daughters when they grew up and so decided to send them to a convent. Livia did not fare well in convent life, but Virginia seemed content in her life as Sister Maria Celeste. (JPG 15k) They always had a loving and strong relationship.
1592 Galileo's father dies at 70, and Galileo becomes the primary financial provider for his family, which includes his mother, his married sister Virginia (whose dowry requires regular payments), his 16-year-old brother Michelangelo, and his unmarried sister Livia. Three other siblings died during childhood.
