Galicia (Spain)

In the past twenty years or so, Galicia has undergone an enormous transformation that has turned it into one of the stars of the Spanish wine scene. On the international level, its white wine is champ. The moist climatic conditions mean less sunlight and more acid, a key factor when elaborating fresh, crisp whites. And inland, you can find distinct fruity reds. One last interesting point is that most of these wines are made exclusively from grape varieties which are native to Galicia.

The mountains in Galicia are not high but have served to isolate the rural population and discourage development of the interior. There is a ski resort in Cabeza de Manzaneda (1700 m) in Ourense Province. The highest mountain is Trevinca (2127 m) on the Ourense eastern border with León and Zamora provinces (Castilla y León).

It was always said that Galicia is the country where Romanesque and Baroque cover everything. This Baroque influence lies in the contrasts caused by light and shade, in the dynamic shapes, in polychrome alternation, in hues and in perspectives. Baroque is in everything, in traditional costume and tools, in the sharp tones of the bagpipes and the "hurdy gurdy" fading away among the oak forests and the mist, in the sea of the rias, in the literary depth of writers like Otero Pedrayo.
