Galaxian³ (... known as Galaxian³: Project Dragoon) is an arcade game released by Namco in 1994 as THE ATTACK OF THE ZOLGEAR. It is a walk-in style arcade game run on a hybrid of laserdisc and traditional arcade hardware. The arcade uses two synchronized laserdisc players to create the pre-rendered backgrounds of the game, and each player takes the role of one of six stationary gunner positions defending a spaceship against an onslaught of enemy ships. Each player shares the same life meter. It was one of only two games released for Namco's "Theater 6" arcade system, the other being it's immediate sequel Attack of the Zolgear.

Originally released in arcades way back in 1979, Galaxian was the first ever color arcade game. Pretty impressive at the time, the game was re-released for the Famicom just five years later. Not much different than Space Invaders, the classic single screen shooter, Galaxian offers alien-attacking fun coupled with seemingly endless gameplay.

The 8-bit and 5200 versions of Galaxian contain a few easter eggs that are worth mentioning. After wave 10, every now and then you'll see a small symbol when you destroy a Galaxian. On wave 10 the symbol is a Pac-Man, on wave 12 the symbol is the Atari logo, and on wave 14, the symbol is the initials JT (for programmer Joe Tung). The game manual calls these 'special screen graphics'. This version ... has an odd 'feature' that allows you to continue playing the game even on the Game Over screen. To access this trick simply start a game and hit the Select button (ending your game).

The Galaxian fleet lines up in ranking order before individually plunging down, bombarding your ship, and then flying back to the lineup. That is, if you don't shoot them first! These creatures are cagey, they'll tease you, diving down, firing, and then dodging your intergalactic fire. The excitement builds as the battle gets tougher. This game requires some quick evasive action and lots of planned strategy. The longer you survive, the more surprises you're in for.

The original Galaxian game can be run on the same hardware as PacMan. The only changes done are in reprogramming the flash and reprogramming the FPGA. Since the flash is big enough (4MBit) it can easily hold both games and only reconfiguring the FPGA needs to be done.

Galaxian was so successful that it spawned several follow-up games. The most popular of these was its immediate successor, Galaga , which in a large part eclipsed its ancestor in popularity. Apparently, by the time Gaplus was released, the audience had tired of the repeated formula of the game, which had been exploited by numerous similar games by other developers.
