After one semester, Union transferred to Cuesta College in southern California. She only lasted a semester before returning home. Disillusioned and full of self-doubt, Union found work at the local Payless Shoe Source. Though most of her friends worked there, this store would be the place where Union would go through one of her most painful moments.

When Gabrielle was 19 years old, she worked in a shoe store. One day, around closing time, a man walked into the store. Within seconds, Gabrielle says she knew something was wrong…but she stayed silent. "As women, we're raised to be polite and you don't want anybody to feel bad…but my body, my instinct, everything in my being was saying, 'Run. Just run out of the store,'" she says.

Gabrielle gave a great speech welcoming the crowd of around 300. As she discussed in her cover story for the Breast Cancer Handbook in the October issue of SELF, she got a wake-up call about the importance of self exams and annual mammograms when her friend Kristen was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer in her early 30s. She told the crowd that in the time it takes to condition your hair, you can do a self exam. And it's true!

The movie, described as a reverse take on the classic Cinderella story, stars Union as a successful attorney who falls in love with a janitor who is a single father of three children. This relationship causes a rift between the her and her father, as he hoped she would marry wealthy. Shooting begins this summer in Atlanta for Lionsgate.
