Gabriel Garcia Marquez: Latin America
built 188 days ago
LEAD: For two decades, Gabriel Garcia Marquez's remarkable ability to transform the ordinary into the mythical has made him the most celebrated writer in Latin America. Now... the Nobel laureate has written a novel that renders a mythical figure as a man of many ordinary attributes, and the reception around the region has been less than adulatory.
Solitude set the standard for a genre called Magical Realism, which Garcia Marquez wonderfully continued in his following works and which other writers have expanded. Lain-American life is particularly rich with the experiences that create Magical Realism: the reality of political oppression and proud familial obligations easily complement the magic of strong beliefs in the divine and supernatural.
Garcia Marquez is ... noted for his friendship with, and enthusiasm for, Fidel Castro and has previously expressed sympathy for some Latin American revolutionary groups, especially during the 1960s and 1970s. He has also been critical of the political situation in Colombia. Despite accusations made by members of the Colombian government decades ago, there is no evidence that he has openly supported guerrilla groups such as the FARC and ELN that operate in Colombia. Since the early 1980s, Garcia Marquez has occasionally acted as a low profile facilitator, usually in a role that he has shared with Fidel Castro, in several of the attempts at negotiations between the government and the guerrillas.

With Mario Vargas Llosa, Garcia Marquez produced a volume of literary criticism, La novela en America Latina (1968). An episode in Cien anos gave rise to the collection of short stories titled La increible y triste historia de la candida Erendira y de su abuela deselmada (1972; Innocent Erendira and Other Stories). Another series of stories was published as Ojos de perro azul (1972; "Eyes of a Blue Dog"). He later wrote El otono del patriarca (1975; The Autumn of the Patriarch), a satire on Latin American military dictators; and Cronica de una muerte anunciada (1981; Chronicle of a Death Foretold), which examines the events surrounding a murder for honour in a Latin American town.
