Gabon is the world’s largest producer of okoumé, a softwood used to make plywood. In the early 1990s the annual roundwood cut was about 4.3 million cu m (152 million cu ft). The government runs preservation and reforestation programs. The annual fish catch in the early 1990s was about 22,000 metric tons.

Globalization, too, appears to be making a helpful difference for Gabon's media professionals and may help shape an eventual increase in freedom of expression in Gabon. In November 2001 the Association of Free and Independent Publishers in Gabon became a member of the World Association of Newspapers. This relationship will likely offer the Gabon Association's members a certain measure of solidaristic support and some protection against government intrusion and repression as they ply their trade, at least somewhere down the line.
Map Of Gabon Like most of tropical Africa, Gabon is plagued by poor health conditions. Provision of adequate health care has been a top government priority. This probably stems from the example set by Albert Schweitzer, the 20th century's most famous medical missionary, who established a hospital at Lambarene in Gabon.

In a more positive direction... international media have been permitted to operate in Gabon with relatively little government interference. The use of the Internet likewise has been unrestricted, and growing numbers of Gabonese are likely to resort to this form of communication if the government continues to heavy-handedly regulate public expression through the print media and broadcasting networks.
