The version of Funny Games most widely available on DVD in the United States is not rated by the MPAA. Despite being unrated, the film does not feature graphic violence, and almost all of the death and mutilation occurs off-screen.

Funny Games alternates between being harrowing and obnoxious. But it does stay true to its brutal premise right up to the conclusion (the movie features a great twist ending), and is effective on that level. But that one sequence featuring the manipulation of time by a character undermines everything that came before it (and especially everything that comes after).

Still another element that may explain the rarely penetrated barrier between comedy and games are the traditionally unfunny scripts. Until recently scriptwriters have had very little involvement with computer games, which is a shame ‘cause they do it so well with other media.
