Gray Tree Frogs usually reach sexual maturity by the time they are three years old. Males may be distinguished from females by their calling activity. The breeding season usually occurs between May and August (this varies depending on location), and eggs are laid attached to floating vegetation in shallow water. Many bundles consisting of 10 to 40 eggs are laid until about 2,000 eggs have been deposited. These hatch in about five days.

The most important factor when considering any water associated with frogs is that it is clean. Most frogs spend most of their life on or around water which they not only drink but absorb through their permeable skin. In a frog enclosure, a water reservoir can be in the form of a small dish or a larger partitioned area of the enclosure. The amount of water required will vary depending on the species of frog you wish to keep. All frogs which are legally allowed to be kept in Victoria will require water for breeding. Breeding is most often determined by the onset of seasonal rain. Increasing the level or amount of water in the enclosure is often important if your frogs are to spawn.

If you just want to attract frogs to your home you can build a pond in your yard, and have ‘free range frogs’. The frogs will hear the sounds of the pond and come and hang out with you in your pool! For a good frog pond you will need lots of plants and water foliage. It’s best not to take frogs from the wild to add to your pond, as this may spread disease. Instead, let the frogs come to you.

Albert Feng of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and colleagues previously reported that male torrent frogs that live in an area west of Shanghai produced calls that were remarkably similar to bird songs. In a new study, published in Thursday's issue of Nature, Feng and his colleagues determined that the creatures ... communicate with one another through high-frequency ultrasonic calls, which previously only bats, marine mammals and some rodents were known to use. Feng and his colleagues recorded the frogs' audible and ultrasonic calls and then studied how eight other males responded to them, finding that most of them responded to calls in both the audible and ultrasonic ranges.Feng and his colleagues speculated the frogs evolved the ability so they could hear each other above the sound of waterfalls and other noise in their mountainous habitat.
