Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacan on July 6, 1907. In 1925 she was involved in a trolly accident which left her with permanent injuries. Among these were vertebrae fractures, pelvis fractures, fractures in her right foot and a serious abdominal wound caused by a handrail. She was expected to never recover enough to walk again, although she eventually did. The rest of her life was punctuated with treatments and surgeries, including the amputation of her right leg, in order to mitigate the effects of her injuries.

Frida Kahlo is as well known for her larger-than-life life as she is for her paintings. (This is appropriate, given that her paintings were a chronicle of her life.) A bright, well-educated girl who overcame polio in childhood, Frida took up painting as a therapeutic outlet after a 1925 bus accident nearly killed her. "In 1925, Kahlo suffered the serious accident which was to set the pattern for much of the rest of her life. She was travelling in a bus which collided with a tramcar, and suffered serious injuries to her right leg and pelvis. The accident made it impossible for her to have children, though it was to be many years before she accepted this. It ... meant that she faced a life-long battle against pain. In 1926, during her convalescence, she painted her first self-portrait, the beginning of a long series in which she charted the events of her life and her emotional reactions to them.

Frida again became lonely and began to sketch just as she did when she first discovered her talent to paint. However, in this new land, no one took her artwork seriously. Kahlo was expected to play the role of the "good wife" in America. She, the wife of a famous muralist soon could not believe in herself and was unsure of her own talents. This made her emotions even more daunting , pulling her into deeper depression. However, Frida's sufferings inspired her to paint the best paintings of her life.
