Frida Kahlo was a painter whose work fascinated prominent and diverse artists around the world. The wife of world-renowned Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, Kahlo forged a place in the art world that was completely of her own. Her dramatic work consisted primarily of self-portraits, although she did capture her family and friends on canvas on occasion. Some critics contend that Kahlo's paintings were reflections of her personal history, her relationship with Diego Rivera; her damaged physical condition, her philosophy of nature and life, and her individual and mythological worldview. Although Kahlo never had formal training in art, she developed into an artist who fascinated wide range of fellow artist, including Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein, painter Pablo Picasso, and novelist Andre Breton. In addition to these literary and artistic luminaries, her circle included political figures such as Leon Trotsky and the Rockefeller family.

Visually, "Frida" is a stunning achievement in imagination, art design, set and costume. Director Julie Taymor and company quite literally bring Kahlo's art to life with recreations of her work given to subtle animation that is surreal eye candy. The helmer has a proven ability to achieve visually arresting mise-en-scene and she puts her artistic eye to work here as well. The techs working with her - cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, production designer Felipe Fernandez del Paso, art director Bernardo Trujillo, costume designer Julie Weiss - are first rate and help propel the film, looks wise, above the script and weaker secondary characters.
The supporting cast of The Two Fridas hasn't been announced yet, but Frida Kahlo has Antonio Banderas, Ashley Judd, Alfred Molina, and Edward Norton among its (likely) credits. Both films are starting at the same time, so it will be a question of who can get a finished product to theaters in time. Miramax has had problems of late with holding onto films for upwards of two years, but then again, so has MGM, UA's parent company. Should this come down to a race for the "awards season" of late 2001 (which seems very possible), Miramax has the obvious advantage if you believe "the Miramax machine" actually works (it does for some movies, certainly).
Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo had affairs with both men and women, including her husband's mistresses. She has ... been linked to movie stars Dorlores del Rio, Paulette Goddard and Maria Felix, among others. Her painting Two Nudes in a Forest (1939) clearly shows her attraction and love of women.
Frida Kahlo lived between 1907 and 1954 in a time of incredible worldwide movements and changes. The Mexican Revolution occurred just three years after she was born, a development that triggered dramatic social and economic change in Mexico. A new sense of nationalism surged throughout Mexico as the people rejected dictator Porfirio Diaz and his policies, and a renaissance of cultural renewal glorifying Mexico's native roots took place. The Mexican muralist tradition grew out of these changes and proved to be an enduring method of expressing national pride. Kahlo was an active participant in the social, economic and political landscape that characterized that life. Frida Kahlo was born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderon on July 6, 1907, in her parents' house in Coyoacan, Mexico a suburb of Mexico City.

Frida Kahlo During her life Frida Kahlo received more recognition as a painter in the United States than in Mexico. She was included in several important group exhibitions, including "Twenty Centuries of Mexican Art" at the Museum of Modern Art and a show of women artists at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century Gallery in New York. Her first one-person show in Mexico at the Galeria Arte Contemporaneo occurred only one year before her death and in part because her death was anticipated. After her death in 1954 her reputation grew in Mexico and diminished in the United States, a time when communists and their sympathizers were discredited. Diego Rivera himself is less known in the United States now than in the 1930s.
