In a way, the Second Empire did amount to a secular religion, replete with martyrs and apostles. It made use of the nascent mass media to manipulate public opinion. It pursued industrialization and administrative modernization. But these features characterized all the political movements of the late 19th century, including socialism, and other empires, such as the Habsburg Austro-Hungary.

This light is an oddity: a three-story French Second Empire mansion dropped into the middle of New London Harbor. The light was built in 1909, when the older New London Light was deemed inadequate. The small cylindrical tower which rises from the mansion's roof originally housed a fourth-order lens which rotated in a pan of mercury, but this was replaced in 1984 with an automated beacon.
Second Empire Here is a completely different kind of Second Empire building used for commercial purposes. The roof has the standard Mansard slope and dormers. In this case there are four dormers, two of which are roundels.

The James K. Landis House, on Landis Avenue in Vineland, is a modest example of French Second Empire architecture. In 1862, the year after this house was built, another Landis – Charles K. Landis – laid out the city of Vineland. The city was incorporated as a borough in 1880.
