This Second Empire mansion is in the midst of being remodeled. It has a tall tower between two projecting bays. Both tower and bays have Mansard roofs with high round-headed dormer windows. There is an elaborate roof cornice with large cornice brackets.
Known as the "Queen of Greene Street," this former business headquarters dominates the street with its ornate French Second Empire facade. This building exemplifies the way in which elaborate architectural ornament can be produced economically and rapidly using cast-iron technology. The entrance is monumentalized by a central bay pushed out from the facade. Above, the windows are emphasized by engaged Corinthian columns topped by elaborate , segmented arches. Dormer windows project from a Mansard roof which is crowned by a broken pediment. [detail1] [detail2]

[T]he Second Empire was insufficiently authoritarian or revolutionary to warrant this title. It did foster and encourage a personality cult, akin to the "Fuhrerprinzip" but it derived its legitimacy, conservatively, from the Church and from the electorate. It was an odd mixture of Bonapartism, militarism, clericalism, conservatism and liberalism.

The first true Second Empire building in the United States may have been the Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC, completed in 1859. Now part of the Smithsonian Institution Museum of American Art, it was built originally to house the extensive private art collections of millionaire William Wilson Corcoran. Co-opted during the Civil War as a government office building, it was returned for a time after the war to its owner before being put back into government service. The architect, James Renwick... designed the Smithsonian's celebrated Castle on the Washington Mall.
