New Zealand has close indigenous cultural links with French Polynesia. The French Polynesian island of Raiatea is considered by tradition to be one of the main islands from where the original Maori arrived in New Zealand. The area that is now French Polynesia is the wellspring of Maori language and possesses a close linguistic association with contemporary spoken Maori.

Polynesian island groups outside of this great triangle include Tuvalu and the French territory of Wallis and Futuna. Rotuma in the northern Fijian islands and some of the Lau group to Fiji's southeast have strong Polynesian character too. There are ... small outlier Polynesian enclaves in Papua New Guinea, the Solomons and in Vanuatu. However, in essence, it is an anthropological term referring to one of the three parts of Oceania (the others being Micronesia and Melanesia) whose pre-colonial population generally belongs to one ethno-cultural family as a result of centuries of maritime migrations.

There are two daily newspapers in French Polynesia, both publishing in French and originating in Tahiti. Neither publishes on Sunday. La Dépĉche is the largest and more renowned of the two; its circulation is approximately 14,000 and it maintains a website. Founded in 1961, Les Nouvelles de Tahiti was the island's first daily newspaper; it has a circulation of 6,700 and provides news content to the Web portal tahiti1.com.
