Politics of French Polynesia takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic French overseas collectivity, whereby the President of French Polynesia is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Assembly of French Polynesia.

The fauna of French Polynesia is generally richer in the lagoons than in the surrounding ocean. The tiger-shark stays in deep water during the day but swims up in the channels at night. Manta rays and giant turtles are not uncommon. Non Threatening Gray sharks are very common as are whales and dolphins. The lagoons, their fringing reefs, and their barrier reefs accommodate a very rich fauna. The coral reefs themselves are constructed by living creatures.

In the past, resorts offering designated children's activities were unheard of in French Polynesia. However, the year-old St. Regis Resort, Bora Bora was designed with both couples and families in mind. Kid-friendly features include a family pool and the Kids Creativity Club that offers activities including pareo painting, scavenger hunts, and lagoon swimming and snorkeling.

French Polynesia is an outdoor destination, so the timing of your trip will probably be influenced by the weather. The dry winter period from May to October is the best time to go; the weather is cooler and there is much less rainfall during this time. Temperatures rise during the November to April summer wet season when it's humid, cloudy and very rainy. Three-quarters of the annual rainfall occurs during this period, generally in the form of brief, violent storms, although torrential rains lasting several days are not uncommon.

The pass dive at Rangiroa was a highlight of the French Polynesia trip. The divers jumped off the Nautica in more than one hundred meters of water, stopping at 30 meters deep. Interested in the commotion several sharks swam in to have a look staying just at the edge of visibility.

There are occasional outbreaks of the mosquito-borne disease dengue fever in French Polynesia. Following a recent increase in cases of dengue fever, particularly in Papeete, it is strongly recommended you take precautions against being bitten by mosquitoes. For further information on dengue fever see the WHO's Dengue factsheet.
