Chopin wurde als Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin in Żelazowa Wola (Polen) geboren. Sein Geburtsdatum ist nicht eindeutig gesichert. Auf seiner lateinisch geschriebenen Taufurkunde, die etwa 50 Jahre nach seinem Tode entdeckt wurde, ist als Geburtsdatum der 22. Februar 1810 und als Taufdatum der 23. April vermerkt. Taufort war die Wehrkirche von Brochów (Polen).

The most conspicuous changes are in Breitkopf und Härtel's reissues, and there is little chance that Chopin had any part in them. Rather, they seem to represent an editor's attempt to rectify what he considered omissions or flaws in the first editions. Dynamics, pedaling, and phrasing are added, and passages that Chopin provided with different expression marks, harmonizations, or rhythms when they recurred later in the piece are altered so that each appearance of the passage is the same. Imposing such regularization removes a distinctive characteristic of Chopin's music, so it is particularly important for modern scholars and editors to identify which edition they are using.

In 1845, even as a further deterioration occurred in Chopin's health, a serious problem emerged in his relations with George Sand, further soured in 1846 by problems involving Sand's daughter Solange and the young sculptor Jean Baptiste Auguste Clesinger. This was the year that Sand published Lucrezia Floriani, whose main characters — a rich actress and a prince in weak health — may be interpreted as Sand and Chopin; the story was uncomplimentary to Chopin. In 1847 the family problems finally brought to an end the relations between Sand and Chopin that had lasted ten years, since 1837.
