Besides Clift and Brando, other Zinnemann discoveries included Pier Angeli and John Ericson, who co-starred in Teresa (1951), with Rod Steiger and Ralph Meeker debuting in secondary roles. And in Oklahoma! (1955), Zinnemann's version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, the wide screen format Todd-AO made its debut, as did the film's young star Shirley Jones.
The Italian court found that Fred Zinnemann made a conscious artistic choice to film The Seventh Cross in black and white (Technicolor had been around for decades) and that the colorization of the film clearly harmed his artistic integrity. In this view, and not without reason, Zinnemann is located within a perceived Tradition of Quality exemplified in Hollywood by George Stevens and William Wyler. Cuichini, Studio Legale Chiomenti, Rome, Italy. Tim Zinnemann charged that the airing of the altered version of the film damaged his father’s artistic honor and reputation. With its final ruling in favor of Zinnemann, the court sent a clear message that Italian law stands behind the rights of all film artists, regardless of nationality.
