Both saxophonist Fred Haas and bassist Michael Moore have recorded excellent duo CDs with guitarist Gene Bertoncini. On Telling Stories, the twos become a three, with Haas doubling on sax and piano and supplying all the material. It’s obvious from the first track, the affable “Cayman Blues,” that Haas is a talented composer who writes from the heart; he’s ... thoroughly accomplished on both instruments, playing with subtlety and taste. With Bertoncini and Moore in top form, it’s an elegant, expressive threesome, and together they provide a relaxed and welcoming set.
Fred Haas, Senior Lecturer in Music, has performed with Oscar Peterson, Ray Charles, Pat Metheny, Clark Terry, Milt Jackson, Joe Morello, Don Cherry, and many others. A Dartmouth graduate ('73), Fred teaches saxophone, jazz piano, jazz improvisation, jazz history and music theory. He ... mentors several jazz combos as part of the Performance Lab program in the Music Department. He is the founder of Interplay Jazz Camp, an intensive, holistic, summer workshop in jazz improvisation that integrates yoga and meditation with the study of music. Fred has recorded many CDs, including several for his own JazzToons label. He is also an active performer and composer, traveling internationally to play and teach with a variety of jazz groups.

Fred Haas, who grew up in the log house, returns to see the newly restored structure. The Haas family moved to the log house sometime shortly after 1901, the year Fred Haas was born. His recollections are woven into the account of archeological findings. Although he was nearly 90 when he was interviewed for this project, his memory was sharp and his storytelling abilities unfettered by age. Although ill health prevented him from being at the house during the investigations, he returned for a celebration with his family and the current owners following its restoration. On viewing the painstakingly rebuilt log house, he exclaimed in typically forthright fashion, "The house never looked this good!"
