Two-time Players champion Fred Couples is not only missing the tournament for only the second time since he first played in 1982, but there is no firm date when his back would allow him to return to the PGA Tour. "He's hurting right now," said Lynn Roche, Couples' agent. "He was hurting at Augusta [during the Masters] and he tried to rest for The Players. He loves the event and he knows it's center stage. But he's just trying to rest and get it to calm down a little." Roche said terming Couples' ability to play a week-to-week decision would be optimistic...It's more like month-to-month now." Couples won The Players in 1984 and 1996, becoming the first player to win twice at the Stadium Course.

Beyond his 14 Tour victories (including a Masters title and two wins at THE PLAYERS Championship), Fred Couples is known for his effortless swing and prodigious power. However, those who study the mechanics of the golf swing know that, despite his easy-going demeanor, Couples possesses outstanding technique and is a great golfer to learn from. Try to copy his sand play technique, for example (Couples topped the Sand Save Percentage ranking in 2000), and you, too, might play in five Ryder Cups (but don't count on it).

Fred Couples has achieved an astounding 14 PGA tour victories, with the 1992 Masters the jewel in his crown. His strength is obviously his driving, and correspondingly his iron play lives and dies with it. His first PGA tour win was in the five-man playoff at the 1983 Kemper Open, which he followed by capturing the Tournament Players Championship in 1984. He then claimed his first of two Nissan Los Angeles Open titles in 1990. In 1992, he finished first on the PGA Money list tallying over 1.3 million dollars.
