Franz Joseph Haydn: Austria
built 640 days ago
Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau, Austria in 1732 and died in Vienna in 1809.  He composed this concerto in 1783 and it was probably first performed soon thereafter at the Esterházy estate in Vienna with Anton Kraft the cellist.  The score calls for solo cello, 2 oboes, 2 horns and strings.
Haydn by Johann Zitterer 1794 Haydn returned to Vienna in July 1792 only to set out for England again in January 1794. The second visit was, if possible, even more successful than the first, and King George III asked Haydn to move to London permanently. This Haydn felt unable to do, and he returned to Austria in August 1795. In the meantime Prince Anton had died. A new Prince Nikolaus pressed Haydn back into limited service to provide an annual Mass for the Esterházy chapel. As it happened, Haydn's own thoughts had centered on choral music ever since he had attended the Handel commemoration at Westminster Abbey.

Haydn was born in the tiny Austrian town of Rohrau, where his father made huge wooden carts and wagonwheels. His mother was a cook. When he was 8, Joseph (he didn't go by Franz) went to Vienna to sing in the choir at St. Stephen's Cathedral, and to attend the choir school. His younger brother Michael joined him a short time later. Joseph could never resist a playing a joke, which got him in trouble at school. Since Michael Haydn was much better behaved than his brother, everyone thought he would be the more successful musician.
Haydn was born in an Austrian village called Rohrau. There, he lived with his father who's profession was a wheelwright. His 2 brothers, Michael and Johann Haydn, were singers and this talent was ... carried down to Haydn. He went to Vienna once he was accepted into the St. Stephen's Cathedral Choir as a choirboy. This was also where he settled in an attic and mastered the art of the harpsichord once he was dismissed from the choir.

When he was 5 years old, Haydn was sent to live with a relative for comprehensive music instruction. When he was 8 years old, Haydn became a chorister at St. Stephen's Cathedral, where he stayed until his voice broke at age 17.
