With the encouragement and help of his wife, Eleanor, and political confidant, Louis Howe, Roosevelt resumed his political career. Eleanor who had no participated in politics began public speaking engagemnents to help keep Franklin's name before the public. It was a very diificult undertaking for Eleanor who had no experience with public speaking. She was aided by an unlikely individual. Franklin's clesest political adviser was Louis Howe, a withered rather uncooth individual who was apolitical geniys. Eleanor didn't like him, but they slowly became close friends as he coached her.

Roosevelt made an immediate impact in the legislative session of 1911. At that time U. S. senators from New York were elected by the legislature, not by popular vote. The Democrats, with majorities in both houses, prepared to select William F. Sheehan, a transportation and utilities magnate who was the choice of Tammany Hall, New York City's powerful political machine. A few Democrats balked at the choice. Roosevelt joined them and became their leader.

Sara was the dominant influence in Franklin's early years.[4] Frequent trips to Europe made Roosevelt conversant in German and French. He learned to ride, shoot, row, and play polo and lawn tennis.
