Franklin and Eleanor at Campobello Island, Canada, in 1905. On March 17, 1905, Roosevelt married Eleanor despite the fierce resistance of his mother. Her uncle, Theodore Roosevelt, stood in at the wedding for Eleanor's deceased father Elliott. The young couple moved into Springwood, his family's estate, where FDR's mother became a frequent house guest, much to Eleanor's chagrin. Franklin was a charismatic, handsome and socially active man. In contrast, Eleanor was shy and disliked social life, and at first stayed at home to raise their children. They had six children in rapid succession:
Roosevelt named nine justices to the court, second only to the number of justices appointed by George Washington. The only seat on the Court not filled by FDR at the time of his death was that of Owen Roberts. He nominated the populist senator Hugo Black to replace Willis Van Devanter. Solicitor General Stanley Reed, who had argued many important agency cases, filled the vacancy caused by George Sutherland's resignation. Felix Frankfurter, Harvard Law School professor and a crucial member of FDR's brain trust, was named to Benjamin N. Cardozo's seat. Former Yale Law School professor and chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, William O. Douglas, succeeded Louis D. Brandeis.

In 1904, Franklin entered law school at Columbia University. He got married while attending law school. On March 17, 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt gave away his niece in marriage to Franklin Roosevelt. The marriage was successful on surface. with in the next eleven years, Franklin and Eleanor produced six children. The names of the children are: Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (1906-1975)‚James Roosevelt(1907-1991), Elliot Roosevelt (1910-1990), Franklin Delano Roosevelt jr. (1914-1988), and John Aspinwall Roosevelt (1916-1981). Franklin’s mom’s possessive and domineering attitude toward her son caused much strife in his early marriage.
Franklin and Elenor had five children who survived infancy, four boys and a girl. Their children were Anna Eleanor, James, Elliott, Franklin D. Jr., and John; a sixth child died at infancy. Like their father the children spent most of their summers on Campabello and many of the available photographs of them as children were taken there. Elenor particularly appreciated the informality of Campabello and probably the fact that her mother-in-law was often not there. At Campabello Elenor did not have to worry. In fact she had a huge megaphone built on the porch where she would yell out "Children!!"

After the election, Roosevelt refused Hoover's requests for a meeting to come up with a joint program to stop the downward spiral, claiming it would tie his hands. The economy spiralled downward until the banking system began a complete nationwide shutdown as Hoover's term ended. In February 1933, an assassin, fired five shots at Roosevelt, missing him but killing Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak; historians agree that FDR was the target, not the mayor.
In his famous Brother's Keeper speech in Gainesville, Georgia, Roosevelt lashed out at Republicans. In 1938 FDR tried to rid himself of Georgia Senator Walter F. George, a conservative Democratic who had opposed his packing the Supreme Court. He attacked both Senator George and the Supreme Court in speeches, once threatening to run his tenant farmer against the Democrat. George, firmly ensconced in his Senate seat, easily defeated his FDR-backed opponent in the Democratic primary.
