Frank Lampard: Goals
built 634 days ago
Lampard scored his first goal for the national side on August 20, 2003 in a friendly against Croatia, which England won 3–1. Combined with his improving club form, this helped him earn a place in the England team for the match against Iceland in the FA's Summer Tournament before Euro 2004, and he scored his second international goal as England won 6–1.

Vice-captain to John Terry, Lampard was one of the keys to Chelsea's immense success in the 2004/05 season. A regular fixture in the centre of midfield, Lampard started 58 times in all competitions, scoring 19 goals.

Lampard shouldn’t be considered better at shooting than Gerrard simply because he attempts more efforts on goal from the free-attacking role he is given at Chelsea. Yes, Lampard scores a lot of goals, but how many of those goals are deflected?! Every week, Lampard gets the ball outside of the box, head down, shoots, usually a deflection! He’s a really selfish player, with (for all the attention on his shooting ability gets) nowhere near the shot-power that Gerrard possesses.

Lampard’s international career started at Under-21 level when Peter Taylor brought him into the camp. Scoring nine goals in total for the U21 team, he ... captained them for the European Championship in 2000. By that time he had already made his full England debut, against Belgium in October 1999, but it proved to be a false start and he had to wait for another year and a half before his second cap, against Spain in February 2001.

Lampard plays a key role in moving the ball up the pitch for the national team, whether via quick passes along the ground or pinpoint lobs through the air. Who else does MacLaren have at his disposal to perform such a task? What other midfielder in England scored as many goals as Lampard did in open play last season?

Lampard bagged three goals in four games as England reached the quarter-finals, cementing a place for himself in the starting line-up. He would go on to be named in UEFA's squad of the tournament.
