"I know Chelsea's winner at Reading on Saturday went down as an Ivar Ingimarsson own-goal, but it begs the question: just how many of Frank Lampard's goals are deflected?" asks Adam Walkden.

Lampard had an impressive start to the next season with his club, being selected as the Barclays Player of the Month in September 2003 and the PFA Fans' Player of the Month in October. This was the season when Lampard's goal-scoring prowess came to the fore, notching up double-figures in league goals for the first of ...-far four consecutive seasons. Chelsea reached the semi-final of the Champions League before being eliminated by AS Monaco, with Lampard scoring four goals in fourteen games, including strikes in both the quarter-finals (against Arsenal) and the second-leg against Monaco. Chelsea also finished second in the Premiership behind Arsenal, their highest finish in the top division since winning the title in 1955.

For Chelsea, of course, Lampard does much the same. Driving forward from midfield, he scored 18 times in all competitions last season including both goals in the 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers that secured Mourinho's team a first league title in 50 years. This season he is on course to surpass that total and help Chelsea to a second successive championship. The UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup are other objectives for a player for whom the horizon appears a place of endless possibilities right now.

Lampard made his return against Liverpool in a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge. On February 16, 2008, Lampard scored his 100th and 101st goals for Chelsea in a 3-1 victory in the sixth round of the FA Cup against Huddersfield Town. Lampard ... provided the final pass for Salomon Kalou to score Chelsea's third goal. After the final whistle, Lampard paid tribute to the Chelsea fans, wearing a shirt with the message "100 Not Out, They Are All For You, Thanks."

Since coming off the bench to claim his first goal for England in the 3-1 friendly win against Croatia in August 2003, Lampard has become a permanent presence on Sven-Goran Eriksson's team sheet. After ending that season with double figures for Chelsea, he struck three times for England at UEFA EURO 2004, his first senior international tournament, and by the close of the 2004 calendar year was receiving recognition for this breakthrough in the shape of the prize for Official England Player of the Year. No small achievement given Wayne Rooney's feats at EURO 2004.
