Frank Lampard: Fa Cup

Lampard has recently become a target for abuse from a section of England's support. He was booed during a friendly match against Brazil on 22 June 2007, leading England manager Steve McClaren to publicly support the player and plead with fans to stop.[26] He was again booed by England fans when coming on as a second-half substitute during England's Euro 2008 qualifying match against Estonia on 13 October 2007.[27]

Lampard made his first appearance for the senior England team on October 10, 1999, starting in a friendly against Belgium in Sunderland. He played 76 minutes in the 2–1 victory, being replaced by Dennis Wise. He was not selected as one of the 23-man squad for the England side for Euro 2000, nor for the World Cup finals in June 2002 in Japan and South Korea.

Since then Lampard has only got better. His Barcelona-supporting, Spanish girlfriend Elen may not be able to understand why he cannot score goals like Ronaldinho but what he does instead is score them like Lampard - that is to say, with remarkable regularity. In England's qualifying campaign for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, Lampard finished as their top scorer with five goals, setting the seal on a successful campaign with the winning strikes in their final two qualifiers against Austria and Poland. Against the Austrians it was from the penalty spot that he struck, having taken over that particular duty from David Beckham, while against Poland it was an exquisite volleyed effort that won the match - a goal struck with the confidence becoming a player at the very top of his game.

Kevin Keegan was in charge when Lampard made his international debut on 10 October 1999, although he was not selected for England's ill-fated UEFA EURO 2000 campaign, instead captaining the Under-21s. Was selected for Sven-Göran Eriksson's first match but again missed out when the 2002 FIFA World Cup squad was announced. However, Lampard bounced back to play in UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying.

Lampard was a public schoolboy too, often bullied by other posh mincers about his weight, he now suffers from a compulsive eating disorder as a result of this vile bullying. Another little known fact is that his "girlfriend" was born a man, his real name being Carlos Miguel.

Despite gaining five more caps over the next year or so Lampard was not picked to go to the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea. By his own later admission, he was still learning his craft, and that learning and been accelerated by his move to Chelsea under Claudio Ranieri in May 2001 for £11 million. Although this released Lampard of pressure from accusations of favouritism from his father and uncle, it introduced the pressure of delivering against what was then a fairly high transfer fee, but slowly and surely Lampard rose to the challenge.
