Frances Bavier (December 14, 1902 – December 6, 1989) was an Emmy Award-winning American character actress, best remembered for her role as Aunt Bee on The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry R.F.D. from 1960 to 1970. Her role of Aunt Bee earned her an Emmy Award as Best Supporting Actress in 1967, making her one of only two cast members on either show to win an Emmy Award (Don Knotts is the other).
Frances Bavier, better known as Aunt Bee, provided for UNC-TV through a bequest. Frances’s many cats were well provided for, but they could not use her Emmy Award for "The Andy Griffith Show," so she willed it to UNC-TV along with the remainder of her estate. This generous gift contributed more than $344,000 to the UNC-TV endowment fund and is still giving to North Carolinians today.
