The borders of modern France closely align with those of the ancient territory of Gaul, inhabited by the Gauls, a Celtic people. Gaul was conquered by the Romans in the first century BC, and the Gauls eventually adopted Romance speech and culture. Christianity ... took root in the second and third centuries AD. Gaul's eastern frontiers along the Rhine were overrun by Germanic tribes in the fourth century AD, principally the Franks, from which the ancient name of "Francie" derived. The modern name "France" derives from the name of the feudal domain of the Capetian Kings of France around Paris (see now Île-de-France).

Despite the name, Gites de France offers B&B as well as holiday rental (gite) accommodation.The average B&B price for two including breakfast is €45-50. It is possible to rent just for a weekend, and in a group of 4 or more this becomes very cheap, especially outside the summer months. There are many gites to rent for under €150 for the whole weekend, that will sleep 5 or more people comfortably.

The best time to visit France is April-October, though August can be a bit hot and cities tend to empty out and close down as everyone heads to the coast; service suffers during this period. Day temperatures range from the mid-70s to the 90s F/23-37 C, with nights in the 50s-70s F/10-27 C. Temperatures generally increase as you go south; the extreme south is 10 F/6 C warmer on average. The months of May and October are the nicest for touring, but it's often too cool to lie on the beach, even on the Riviera. The winters are cold, wet and sometimes snowy, especially in the mountains, and can be downright miserable (lows below freezing and highs in the 50s F/10-15 C), though there is excellent skiing in the winter in the Alpine region. The Riviera is moderate during the winter, much like Southern California, but it's really too cold for swimming. In any case, take a sweater—the nights can be cool any time of the year.
