As the Roman Empire faded, France was overrun by a series of barbarian invaders and shattered into varied factions. The name France is from the Latin word 'Francia' meaning (country of the Franks), a Germanic people who conquered the area during the 5th century.

Holidays in France - IndigoGuide France is a country with a history that goes back to 50,000 BC. Hence there are literally thousands of monuments to visit, from Roman amphitheatres in Arles and Nimes, to troglodyte caves and other items of prehistoric interest in Brittany, the Massif Central and the south. France's museums are often well worth visiting for their interesting and well-stocked collections. Don't worry if you can't speak French as many of the museums have explanations in English, French, German and Spanish. It is not only the museums in Paris that are valuable either. Toulouse has a fabulous modern art museum to rival the Pompidou Centre, for example, and there are great museums all over the provinces.

France is a nation of varied landscapes, ranging from coastal lowlands and broad plains in the north, to hilly uplands in south central France, to lush valleys and towering, snow-capped Alps in the east. Mountainous and hilly areas lie on nearly all of France’s borders, creating a series of natural boundaries for the country. Only the nation’s northeastern border is largely unprotected. Several major rivers drain France, including the Seine, Loire, Garonne, and Rhône.

The end of the XIX century was the start of the industrialization of the country, the development of the railways but ... the start of the bitter wars with Prussia and later Germany.
