Fragile X Syndrome: Child
built 670 days ago
There is currently no cure for fragile X syndrome. However, an individualized treatment plan, beginning during the preschool years, can help affected children reach their full potential. Most children with fragile X syndrome can benefit from treatment by a team of health professionals and special educators. The members of the team may include speech/language therapists, physical and occupational therapists, special educators, psychologists and pediatricians.
Eye contact is more aversive to a child with fragile X syndrome than to autistic students. Forced eye contact can trigger arousal and extreme discomfort which is expressed in hand flapping, perseverative speech, hand rubbing (sweaty palms), and aggressive behavior. Interventions include not forcing eye contact, allowing student to wear sunglasses, or asking educational diagnostician to wear sunglasses when administering appraisal tests. Students with fragile X syndrome already tend to do poorly on IQ tests because it is a change in routine, but they perform better on achievement tests which are related to classroom routines.

This study examines the brain structure of very young children with Fragile X Syndrome on MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, scans at 2 and 4 years of age. The combined Fragile X project will study 60 Fragile X, 60 developmentally delayed and 30 typically developing males between 18 and 42 months of age, with follow-up brain scans 24 months later.

Aquatic Therapy can be a great venue for promoting physical and social development of individuals with Fragile X Syndrome. Aquatic exercise can help stimulate fine and gross motor developmental patterns, assist with strength development, challenge a child's coordination and balance, as well as promote sensory integration of novel sensations, skills and movements.

Men can ... be unaffected carriers of the fragile X chromosome. In such cases the genetic change is passed to all daughters, but to none of the sons. These daughters will themselves be unaffected but at risk of having affected children. Any sons of carrier males will be completely unaffected as they do not receive their X chromosome from their father.
