Forrest Gump was originally a comic written by Winston Groom in 1970. Following the success in the 50s of superhero characters such as superman and duckfink Groom wanted to capture the values of southern America and incorporate them into his vision of a hero. His iconic lair, a bench on witch he sits has captured the imagination of schoolboys all over the world and was brought to the big screen in 1994 in the film “Tom Hanks”. However the film only grossed $677 million world wide and paramount pictures decided that it would be best not to give Groom his share of the profits, in retaliation Groom said they where unable to make a sequel, witch suited paramount just fine.

Forrest Gump is played by Tom Hanks, who underplays the character beautifully. He is a Southern boy who is slower than the average kid. Nevertheless, his caring mother (Sally Field) manages to get him in school thanks to some persuasion with the principal. The problem is Forrest has problems walking (he gets leg braces) and can't seem to get along with kids. Well, there is one that likes him named Jenny (played by Robin Wright) and they become the best of friends. Forrest ... discovers one day he is a fast runner.

Although bittersweet, "Forrest Gump" is a memorable film filled with subtleties. It's ... filled with the occasional jaw-dropping special effect as Tom Hanks is seamlessly blended into film footage shot decades ago. Hanks, himself, did a wonderful job playing Forrest, and was able to master a slow, Southern accent with apparent ease. On the whole, an enjoyable change of pace.
