Formula One: Teams

In addition, one of the main features between Formula One cars' performance is the technical expertise used to design them. This may make teams reluctant to have outsiders, such as loss adjusters, study their cars in detail after a crash.

2006 Brazilian GP. Since 1984 Formula One teams have been required to build the chassis in which they compete, and consequently the terms "team" and "constructor" are more or less interchangeable. This requirement distinguishes the sport from series such as IndyCar Series, Champ Car World Series, and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which allow teams to purchase chassis, and "spec series" such as GP2, which require all cars be kept to an identical specification.
Formula One teams must build the chassis in which they compete, and consequently the terms "team" and "constructor" are more or less interchangeable; this requirement distinguishes the sport from "spec series" such as IRL, CART, Formula 3000 and NASCAR. In its early years, F1 teams sometimes ... built their engines (as with BRM, Cooper and Matra). It has since become rare that a team should construct its own engine, and with the involvement of major car manufacturers such as BMW, Daimler Chrysler, Renault, Toyota, and Honda, such privately-built engines have become less competitive. Currently, only Ferrari, Renault and Toyota build their own engine as well as the car. For a good part of Formula One's history, only Ferrari built the entire car, including engine.

One of the most notable racers Formula One has ever seen due to a damaged leg that meant he had difficulty finding gear at the best of times. Some have questioned his disability as he was never asked to take a drug test (critics of this theory ask how steroids and human growth hormones improve driving ability) despite being seen popping painkillers at almost every opportunity, including pitstops. House ... drove for every single team in the field in his decade-long career, despite there being twelve teams at the time. Unfortunately he never finished a race as everyone tried to take him out because of his extremely arrogant and sarcastic nature.
Formula One went through a difficult period in the early 2000s. Viewing figures dropped, and fans expressed their loss of interest due to the dominance of Michael Schumacher and Ferrari, as well as the reduction of the circuits owing to new safety regulations. At present, smaller teams suffer from spiralling costs. Safety ... remains a key issue. As such, many want to see rule changes to deal with these issues.

The rules between 2000 and 2005[1][2] stated that Formula One engines may be no more than 3 litres engine displacement and must have 10 cylinders. In order to curb increasing power levels, the maximum engine displacement has been reduced to 2.4 litres, and the number of cylinders to 8 for 2006. However, a concession is made in the rules to allow some teams the option of running 10 cylinder 3.0 litre engines for 2006. This rule is intended to help smaller teams unable to produce an engine and chassis to comply fully with the new regulations in time for the 2006 season. All teams using the 10 cylinder 3.0 litre engines will be subject to a rev limiter to decrease power.
