Formula One: Races
built 631 days ago
Inspired by the world of Formula One racing, the exterior design of the new SLK incorporates an arrow-shaped nose, long front hood, steeply sloped windshield and a tapered, wedge-shaped silhouette. The car is nearly three inches longer and wider than its predecessor. Aggressive styling carries through to the rear, marked by a new dual exhaust layout. Stopping power is provided courtesy of huge 13-inch perforated and ventilated front disc brakes with four-piston calipers and 11.4-inch rear discs with two-piston calipers.

Shifting gears in a Formula One car is not the same as shifting gears in a road car with a manual transmission. Instead of using a traditional "H" gate selector, drivers select gears using paddles located just behind the steering wheel. Downshifting is done on one side of the steering wheel, upshifting on the other. Although fully automatic transmission systems, including systems with sophisticated launch control, are possible on Formula One cars, they are now illegal. This helps reduce the overall cost of the power train and enables drivers to use gear-shifting skills to gain advantage in a race.

The second racer involved in that crash, defending Formula One champion Gary Hubler of Caldwell, Idaho, crashed immediately near the point of incident and was killed. He was a seasoned race pilot having competed over 23 years in Reno. Hubler leaves behind his wife Debbie, a son, daughter, parents and grandchildren.

Some drivers are well known for their longevity in Formula one. Graham Hill raced for 18 seasons, Ricardo Patrese raced in 256 races (a record which will incidentally be broken by Rubens Barrichello in 2008). But who has the shortest F1 career which actually qualified for at least one race? Well that honor goes to Marco Apicella at the 1993 Italian GP. Marco travelled approximately 875 yards (800 meters) before he retired after a multi-car collision at the first corner of the very first lap. He never raced in F1 again.

The Formula One car represents the ultimate in automotive technology, capable of top speeds approaching 370kph. Featuring V10 engines capable of 19,000 rpm and producing anything up to 900 horsepower, the cars offer all- round performance levels unmatched in any other race series.

If you're looking for an F1 game for your PlayStation 2, you would do well to give Formula One 2001 a look. It's not the most visually astounding game, but it finds middle ground between being a rigid sim and a strap-in-and-stomp-it arcade racer. The wealth of customizable options combined with a tight, user-friendly control scheme result in an F1 game that will appeal to more than just gearheads. But the game's several gameplay quirks ensure that it falls short of perfection.
