Formula One: Formula One Grand Prix
built 658 days ago
The 2004 Bahrain Grand Prix is the first Formula One race to be held in the Middle East, and just about everything about the race has brought with it a unique set of challenges. For those that need a geography lesson, the Kingdom of Bahrain is an island group located off the central southern shores of the Arabian Gulf between Saudi Arabia's east coast and the Qatar peninsula. The Kingdom of Bahrain signed a long-term deal to host the event with the FIA back in September 2002.
In Formula One , Lewis Hamilton took a 12-point lead into the Chinese Grand Prix, but came away with no points. With cloudy skies overhead and bursts of rain complicating race conditions, teams struggled with tire choice. Dry or wet? Wet or dry? Unfortunately for Hamilton, he and McLaren chose poorly. He stayed out with wet tires on a dry track for one lap too many.
One way or another, a trend has begun in Formula 1 teams where increasingly countries have become involved in the teams. After the sale of a third of the shares of the McLaren Mercedes team to the country of Bahrain last year, the Spyker team was bought out to the tune of 50 percent by a consortium led by Vijay Mallya, the Indian tycoon. Although this is not precisely the country of India buying the team, Mallya's ambitions are clear by the name he gave the new team: Force India. Mallya has been pushing for an Indian Grand Prix, and the team is seen as part of a strategy toward that goal.
Formula One returns to Spa, much to the delight of everyone, and two new races in Bahrain and China mean a very grueling 18 race schedule. The newly built Bahrain International Circuit will host the new Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in April. The brand new Shanghai International Circuit will play host to Formula One and 200,000 spectators for the first ever Chinese Grand Prix in September. Both circuits were designed by the FIA's approved circuit designer Hermann Tilke.
SHANGHAI, China and LONDON, England, October 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The eyes of the sporting world were on China on Sunday as Formula One raced back into Shanghai. To ensure the media broadcasts from the Grand Prix were not interrupted, FLAG Telecom worked alongside its partner China Telecom, provisioning additional capacity to meet the exacting communication needs of the global TV and news agencies covering the event.

A sign displaying that the safety car (SC) is deployed. Safety is of paramount concern in contemporary F1. The Grands Prix, some of which have a history that pre-dates the Formula One World Championship, are not always held on the same circuit every year. The British Grand Prix, for example, though held every year since 1950, alternated between Brands Hatch and Silverstone from 1963 to 1986. The only other race to have been included in every season is the Italian Grand Prix. The World Championship event has taken place exclusively at Monza with just one exception: in 1980, it was held at Imola, host to the San Marino Grand Prix until 2006.
