Ford F-250 Super Duty diesel trucks are the kings of the half-ton capacity truck mountain. The new combination of the Power Stroke turbodiesel engine and Torqshift transmission has created a towing monster with a previously unheard-of smooth power delivery. GM's Duramax turbodiesel/Allison tranny combo anted up and now Ford has taken it to new levels of torque and refinement with the Power Stroke.

The 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty has been fully redesigned. Under the skin, a number of major upgrades take place. Ford says the chassis is stronger than before and now has a new type of coating for improved corrosion resistance. The rear suspension has ... been tweaked to improve ride and handling without compromising capability. For power, there's an updated version of the PowerStroke diesel engine. It now displaces 6.4 liters and makes an impressive 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

The Ford F-250 Super Duty comes in Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab body styles. SuperCab models have small rear-opening doors, while the Crew Cab has four full-size swing-out doors. A plethora of optional equipment is available, including electronic shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive, a heavy-duty suspension package and telescoping trailer-towing mirrors. To match your desired level of opulence, there are three trim levels available: XL, XLT and Lariat. XL models are work trucks, and as such come with a vinyl bench seat in front; manual windows, mirrors and locks; a basic AM/FM radio; and no air conditioner. The XLT adds cloth upholstery, a 40/20/40 front bench, air conditioning, a CD player and a full set of power controls.

The Ford F-250 Super Duty is available with three different engines. The base engine is a 5.4-liter V8 that generates 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. An optional 6.8-liter V10 generates 362 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. The best choice for those who do serious towing and hauling, though, is the 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 rated at 325 hp and 570 lb-ft. A six-speed manual is standard with these engines, but a five-speed automatic is ... available. Properly equipped, an F-250 can tow up to 15,000 pounds.

Ford's 6.8L gasoline-fueled V-10 Triton is a torquey over-square engine that comes in most F-250 Super Duty pickups as well as several popular motorhome chassis. It's a tough 415ci engine that, in stock trim, puts 310 hp and 425 lb-ft to the flywheel, and it loves to tow heavy-duty loads. It's reliable and pretty thrifty on fuel, at least as far as a 415-inch engine can be thrifty. In short, Ford's V-10 is well-engineered, so when you make changes, they better be good ones.

If you like real trucks, you'll love the new 1999 Ford F-250 Super Duty pickups. These trucks are BIG: big dimensions, big V-10 engines, big tires, big comfortable interiors, a big step-in height on 4x4 models-- and big prices. Super Duty trucks are ... beautiful; the styling is handsome in a rugged, masculine way. It's distinct from the Ford F-150 half-ton pickups. Super Duty trucks don't share any components with the F-150 platform. Heavy duty towing and commercial applications are the prime uses of the new Super Duty Fords, but that doesn't mean the driver and passengers are neglected.
