Tires from Firestone and Ford Explorer deaths are linked according to Ford Explorer death statistics. Lawsuits have been filed. Firestone has recalled over 14 million ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT tires after it was revealed that these tires had a serious manufacturing defect. The tires manufactured at one specific plant were found to have a propensity for tread separation. These tire models were originally equipped on various Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Nissan and Subaru vehicles. The Ford Explorer, which came standard with Firestone tires, was implicated in a number of reports that detailed its disproportionate representation in fatal SUV rollover statistics.

1995-1998 Ford Explorer The Ford Explorer Sport was a 2-door version of the Ford Explorer, and was produced from 1991 to 2003. The Sport began as a trim level of the Ford Explorer, but it eventually became its own model. It rode on a 10" shorter wheelbase. There was only one Sport, but there were several other trim levels of the Explorer that were available with 2 doors(edmunds trim levels), such as the XL (1991-1997), the Eddie Bauer (1991-1994), and the Expedition (1995). In 1998 the Explorer Sport became the only 2-door trim level of the Explorer, and in 2001 it became its own model, as the second generation Explorer moved on to a 4-door-only 3rd generation.
The Ford Explorer has a functional interior, ample passenger space, strong powertrains and a well-controlled ride. The Explorer's fully independent suspension gives it a reasonably comfortable ride and fairly responsive handling. Access is easy. The versatile interior features useful storage cubbies. The base V6 is noisy and unrefined, the optional V8 is quicker but thirsty. Stability control is standard.

The Ford Explorer decision aside, NHTSA reminds consumers that SUVs in general have a greater tendency to roll over during a crash than passenger cars. In 2000, 62 percent of all SUV fatalities were the result of rollover, compared to 22 percent for passenger cars.
The 1991 Explorer's roomy interior and strong acceleration earned rave reviews. The Ford Explorer received a few detail updates for its second year. Horsepower was rerated to 145 with manual shift, 160 with the automatic transmission (ordered by the vast majority of customers). Sport and XLT versions now included a rear window wiper/washer, and the available power windows added a one-touch-down feature for the driver's window. Six-way power front bucket seats were newly standard for Eddie Bauers and optional for other Explorers. Deep-tinted rear "privacy glass" was a new extra for four-doors.
As of now, Ford Explorer is continuously putting up tight competition against other SUVs. The passing of years does not diminish its worth bur rather maximized its full potentials in the aspects on style, design, looks, power, performance and road dynamics. Another advantage of owning a Ford explorer is the constant availability of its parts. New and much easier means can now be employed which includes on-line marketing. Auto parts and car accessories for repair, maintenance or replacement are offered in on-line stores lined-up in the net. Placement and inspection of orders are done in similar ways like traditional stores but in the net, transaction is done electronically.
