Foradil is an asthma medication. It relaxes the muscles in the walls of the airways, allowing them to expand. When taken on a twice-daily basis, it helps to control asthma and can be used to prevent tightening of the airways (bronchospasm) in patients who need regular treatment with short-acting inhalers, including those with nighttime asthma.

Foradil capsules are for use in the inhaler device only. The capsules should not be taken by mouth. You should make sure you know how to use this inhaler properly (instructions will be provided inside the box). You can ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist for help if you are unsure about anything.

Foradil has a therapeutic dose range of 12 to 24 micrograms bid. Data on the plasma pharmacokinetics of eformoterol was collected in healthy volunteers after inhalation of doses higher than the recommended range and in COPD patients after inhalation of therapeutic doses. Urinary excretion of unchanged eformoterol, used as an indirect measure of systemic exposure, correlates with plasma drug disposition data. The elimination half-lives calculated for urine and plasma are similar.

Foradil, known ... as Formoterol, belongs to the family of medicines known as [beta ]2 -agonists. It is used to help prevent the symptoms of asthma. When used regularly Foradil decreases the number and severity of asthma attacks, but it will not relieve an asthma attack that has already started. Foradil works by preventing certain cells from releasing substances that cause asthma symptoms. Foradil is also used for patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

Do not use Foradil to treat an asthma attack that has already begun. It will not work fast enough to reverse your symptoms. Use another, short-acting inhalation medication to treat an asthma attack. Foradil may increase the risk of asthma-related death. It is critical that you use only the prescribed dose of this medicine and follow all patient instructions for safe use. Talk with your doctor about your individual risks and benefits in using Foradil.

When treating patients with asthma, Foradil should only be used as additional therapy for patients not adequately controlled on other asthma-controller medications (e.g. low- to medium-dose inhaled corticosteroids) or whose disease severity clearly warrants initiation of treatment with two maintenance therapies, including Foradil.
