Foradil: Warnings

The dose of Foradil should be individualized to the patient's needs and should be at the lowest possible dose to fulfill the therapeutic objective. It should not be increased beyond the maximum recommended dose (see Dosage and method of administration).

Foradil ist ein hochpotenter "Full agonist" am ß2-Rezeptor mit hoher ß2-Selektivität und hoher intrinsischer Aktivität. Bei der inhalativen Anwendung von Foradil beträgt die benötigte Substanzmenge deshalb lediglich 12 µg Formoterol pro Kapsel/Hub (Einzelgabe). Die übliche Dosierung beträgt morgens und abends je eine Inhalation. In schweren Fällen kann die Dosierung auf 2 x 2 Inhalationen pro Tag angehoben werden. Die maximale Tagesdosis liegt bei 4 x 12µg.

In patients not currently receiving anti-inflammatory therapy, this must be initiated at the same time as Foradil. Whenever Foradil is prescribed, patients should be evaluated for the adequacy of the anti-inflammatory therapy they receive. Patients must be advised to continue anti-inflammatory therapy unchanged after the introduction of Foradil, even if the symptoms improve.

Die Medikamente mit dem Wirkstoff Salmeterol müssen in den USA bereits seit dem Jahr 2003 mit "black-box warnings" gekennzeichnet sein, Foradil soll in Zukunft eine ähnliche Warnung aufweisen. Es ist üblich, dass sich die FDA an die Empfehlungen ihrer fachärztlichen Beratergruppen hält.

Formoterol is available under two brand names, Foradil and Oxis. Foradil is not recommended for children under five years of age and Oxis is not recommended for children under six years of age.
