Foradil Aerolizer is a medicine called a “long-acting beta-agonist” and is a long-acting bronchodilator medicine. Bronchodilator medicines help to relax the muscles around the airways in your lungs. Wheezing happens when the muscles around the airways tighten. This makes it hard to breathe. In severe cases, wheezing can stop your breathing and cause death if not treated right away.

Foradil capsules are intended for use only with the Aerolizer inhaler; they should not be swallowed. To use the system, place a capsule in the well of the Aerolizer, then press and release the buttons on the side of the device. This will pierce the capsule. The medication is dispersed into the air stream when you inhale rapidly and deeply through the mouthpiece. Do not exhale into the device and do not use a "spacer" with this medication. Detailed instructions are supplied with your prescription.

The approved dosage of Foradil Aerolizer is 12 mcg, twice a day. In clinical trials, adverse reactions with Foradil Aerolizer were similar to those with other selective beta2-agonists, such as tachycardia, tremor, dizziness, insomnia and abdominal pain. Foradil Aerolizer is not a substitute for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Foradil Aerolizer should not be used to treat acute symptoms, or used more than twice daily, and should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders.

In a 16-week, randomized, multi-center, double-blind, parallel-group trial of 2085 patients, Foradil Aerolizer 12 mcg twice daily was compared to Foradil Aerolizer 24 mcg twice daily. Patients who received either 24 mcg twice daily, 12 mcg twice daily, or 12 mcg twice daily plus up to 2 additional doses per day as needed of Foradil Aerolizer experienced a similar number of serious asthma exacerbations as patients who received placebo. The results are shown in the following table.
