Foo Fighters

Born out of a stockpile of songs written by Dave Grohl while drumming for Nirvana, Foo Fighters were originally intended to be Grohl’s solo project. Since officially forming in 1995 the band has had five UK top-ten album hits, including 2002’s ‘One By One’ which entered at number one. You may ... recognize Grohl as the devil in Tenacious D’s video to ‘Tribute’.

The Foo Fighters are an American based modern rock band that was formed musician David Grohl in 1995. The name of the band is in reference to the term “foo fighter” from World War II, which was used to describe a mysterious aerial phenomenon. Grohl had been the drummer for the band Nirvana but following the death of lead singer Curt Cobain, he took songs he had been writing on the side into Robert Lang’s recording studio in Seattle to record a demo track. The music he had written would eventually become the music of The Foo Fighters.

One By One goes from strength to strength in ways no Foo Fighters album has to date. For one, it's the first Foo Fighters record to feature guitarist Chris Shiflett, making the Grohl/Mendel/Hawkins/Shiflett line-up the first to survive two full Foo Fighters album/tour cycles. Or as Taylor Hawkins puts it, "This is the final line-up, the one that lasts until the band breaks up."

Throughout 1996, Foo Fighters supported the album with an extensive tour, enjoying a crossover hit with "Big Me" that spring. Late in the year, the group began recording their second album with producer Gil Norton. During the sessions, William Goldsmith left the band due to creative tensions, leaving Grohl to drum on the majority of the album. Before the record's release in the spring of 1997, Goldsmith was replaced by Taylor Hawkins, who had previously drummed with Alanis Morissette. The Colour and the Shape, Foo Fighters' second album and the first they recorded as a band, was issued in May of 1997. Smear left the group in the wake of the album's completion, and was replaced by guitarist Franz Stahl, whose stay proved short-lived; 1999's There Is Nothing Left to Lose was recorded as a three-piece, with ex-No Use for a Name guitarist Chris Shiflett signing on soon after.
