For the BODY, the font Times New Roman was placed first so that it is the first font checked for. In a case where it has been installed on a Macintosh, it will be used there, as it will on practically every Windows system in the world. If a machine does not have this font, then the browser will go to the next one, Times, and so on. If none of the three fonts listed is available, then the browser will fall back to whatever Serif font it can find. Similar reasoning is used for the construction of the styles for headings.
Changing the look of the font can bring different meaning or clarity to a document. There are many different styles available (not all of the styles are supported in all of the browsers). There have been many proposed elements of the next standard in the HTML language, and some of these proposed items are included in today's browsers. Therefore, some of the items below will not display correctly in browsers in which they are not supported. Example: Netscape has never supported underlining.

The least harmful use of the FONT element is in suggesting relative changes in font size with <FONT SIZE="+1"> or <FONT SIZE="-1">. These tags increment or decrement the font size relative to the size specified in the BASEFONT element, or relative to a base size of 3 if no BASEFONT element is used. Sizes are based on a seven-point scale (1..7) that is browser dependent.

In each of the styles above, the browser would apply the first font in the list which is installed on the computer. If the first font in the list is installed, the computer will apply it. If not, it will try to apply the second in the list, then the third, and so on, until reaching the end of the list of fonts.
