Folic Acid: Amount
built 634 days ago
Very large amounts of folic acid may hide the ability to quickly diagnose a vitamin B12 deficiency, a sign of pernicious anemia. This disease can lead to serious brain and nerve damage if not treated with vitamin B12. Pernicious anemia is rare in young and middle-aged people. Today, physicians can use a series of definitive tests to check individuals for a vitamin B12 deficiency, even when large amounts of folic acid are present.

The anemia caused by folic acid deficiency is identical to that caused by lack of vitamin B12. Using large amounts of folic acid (e.g., over 5,000 mcg per day) can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency, since the anemia will improve but the other effects of vitamin B12 deficiency will continue. This can lead to irreversible nerve damage. Therefore, people with megaloblastic anemia should be treated under medical supervision, since regular testing may be required.

A 1 mg/mL folic acid solution may be prepared by crushing fifty 1 mg tablets. Dissolve in a small amount of distilled water, then add sufficient distilled water to make a final volume of 50 mL. Adjust the pH to 8 with sodium hydroxide. It is stable for 42 days at room temperature.
