Fluoride: Water
built 653 days ago
Fluoride is a very controversial topic because fluoride is a known toxin. In the National Medical Library, over 40 articles can be found on the toxicity of fluoride. Half of the articles said fluoride promotes cancer (mutagenic). It should be noted that Proctor and Gamble paid for some of the "negative-concluding" research. The toxicity of fluoride has caused many countries to rethink allowing fluoride to be added to water. Those banning fluoride are Sweden, Norway, Denmark, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Austria, France, and The Netherlands.

Fluoride (F+) is a common constituent of many minerals. Municipal water treatment plants commonly add fluoride to the water for various reasons, one of them common belief in prevention of tooth decay. Water fluoridation is controversial, and Fluoride is considered to be a poison in all but one European country. Concentrations above 5 mg/l are detrimental to tooth structure. High concentrations are contained in waste water from the manufacture of glass, steel and aluminum as well as from foundry operations. Organic fluorine is present in vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

Fluoride accumulates in ovaries. In laboratory experiments with mice, fluoride damaged the tissues and cellular structures of ovaries and uterus. Scientists showed photographs of the tissues they studied. The sequence of photographs showed the tissues being progressively damaged as the mice became intoxicated with fluoride. When the mice were given vitamin C and calcium supplements and fluoride was not put in their water anymore, the tissues almost returned to the original state of good health.

Fluoride damages enzymes which results in a wide range of chronic diseases. Fluoride as low as 1 ppm causes breakdown of collagen, the most abundant of the body's protein at 30%. It ... leads to irregular formation of collagen which serves as a major structural component of skin, ligaments, tendons, muscles, cartilage, bones and teeth. The United States Pharmacopoeia lists some of the side effects from drinking 1 to 2 pints daily of municipally fluoridated water. The list includes: nausea, bloody vomit, faintness, stomach cramps, tremors, constipation, aching bones, stiffness, skin rash, weight loss, and brown or black discoloration of the teeth. The 1991 Physicians' Desk Reference lists some of the same side effects from administered doses of fluoride.

Fluoride is widely added to drinking water systems to help prevent tooth decay. It is normally added in the form of liquid hydrofluorosilicic acid, which can be easily handled and applied using standard metering pumps. While the fluoridation process is often controlled by simple flow proportional feed, monitoring of final fluoride concentrations is useful in providing an alarm in the case of overfeed problems. Optimum fluoride levels of around 1 ppm are safe, but control system problems resulting in concentrations above 2 ppm are considered excessive and need to be detected as early as possible. Loss of chemical feed can ... be detected quickly and reliably with on-line fluoride monitoring.

Fluoride is not toxic and is classified by the National Research Council as an important trace ion in tooth nutrition. It is an all-natural element similar to other common substances like salt, iron and vitamins. No adverse side effects have been experienced by the millions of people who have drunk fluoridated water at optimum levels for over 50 years.
